PetroServices R&D Strategy

PetroServices GmbH R&D Philosophy & Strategy

Since its foundation, PetroServices has adhered to the philosophy that “Research and Development is the key to the PetroServices of tomorrow”. With this in mind, the company has continually focused its efforts on research and technological development, making the strengthening of basic research and fundamental technologies an important management issue, and has proceeded to create new technologies and technological areas.
As we believe, that research and development is the core of our business future success PetroServices GmbH commits 10% of its annual income to research and development. We at PetroServices are constantly pushing ourselves to develop new sciences and technologies, with the aim of combining our results to develop products with high added value. We will continue to enhance the basic technologies that form the core of our operations and develop new technologies that can be applied around the globe. Looking to the future, we will continue to explore the road of creativity.
PetroServices GmbH research and development strategy is based on three essential parameters, which are consistency, coherence, and alignment.

Consistency

Advantage is not the result of a single decision, but rather the cumulative outcome of a series of decisions, actions, and behaviors over time. A good strategy provides a framework for making consistent decisions over time that build cumulatively toward a desired objective.

Coherence

In a complex organization, many decisions are made each day that can shape competitive capabilities (who gets hired and promoted, which projects get funded, which pieces of equipment are bought, which partners are engaged for collaboration, etc.). They are often made in far-flung corners of the organization. Strategy provides an integrating mechanism to ensure these tactical decisions are coherent. Without a strategy, it is impossible to achieve coherence.

Alignment

Organizations thrive when their strategies are aligned to the realities of the environment or the broader organizational context in which they operate. An R&D organization needs to have a strategy that is aligned with the broader business strategy of the organization in which it operates. A strategy should help drive alignment.

Elements of R&D strategy

Research & development strategies, like all strategies, must start with the devilishly simply question: “how do we intend to win?” The “game plan” for research and development organization can be broken down into four strategic levers: architecture, processes, people, and portfolio. Together, decisions made in each of these categories constitute the research and development strategy as shown in the next figure.
